TRIPLET & DOUBLET COLLECTION [20 Items]
DOUBLET & TRIPLET COLLECTION
When cutting & polishing opals there are many difficulties the cutter must overcome as Opal is not a clear gemstone and comes with interior intrusions, foreign matter, sand, clay or any other stuff it may collect during its formation to opal..
Normally the cutter has to figure out the best way to work around these difficulties but what happens when the opal is too thin as often the case with black or plate opal.
One solution is to turn them into Triplets or Doublets
TRIPLETS:
Are created when the opal is too thin to create a solid covering, the opal is ground down very thinly and sandwiched between a domed top which is usually made from Glass or Quartz.
The backing can be made up using Ironstone. Black Onyx , black opal potch, plastics or even black glass and then the paper thin slice of opal is adhered between these two sections.
DOUBLETS; Are made also when the matrix is sufficient enough to create a top but still too thin to create some depth so a bottom or base is made from Ironstone or Black onyx or any other low grade opal to give the stone some more depth
By applying these methods many beautiful opals can be saved form the chip bottle.
